This area is rich with history. The county was named in honor of Maj. Abram Maury who was an officer in the War of 1812. Columbia is where the home of James K. Polk, the eleventh president of the United States, is located, and Spring Hill had some major roles during the Civil War. The mid 1980's brought a huge economic boost to the area as General Motors announced a Saturn automobile plant would be located in Spring Hill.
